Congratulations to the Lakeville North speech team and Lakeville Area debate team for their outstanding performances at the National Speech and Debate Tournament held June 17-22 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The Lakeville North speech team brought home a School of Excellence trophy for placing among the top 20 teams in the United States. And, the Lakeville Area debate team qualified a record number of students this year.
Lakeville North senior Chloe Mutebi placed fifth in the nation in Informative Speaking.
Five Lakeville North speech students qualified for the semifinal round (top 14) in their respective events. Grace Hjort and Vanessa Nguyen placed eighth in Duo Interpretation. Zach Peick placed 12th in Program Oral Interpretation. Mason Braasch placed eighth and Andrea Schiefelbein placed ninth in Informative Speaking.
Six speech team students reached the quarter-final rounds (top 30) in the nation in their respective events. Sam Sweere, Joshua Weinstein, John Pete and Dennis Muchiri all competed in the Duo Interpretation. Tage Singh competed in Humorous Interpretation. And, Kelly Lingen competed in Program Oral Interpretation. Speech team student Noah Schetnan qualified and competed in Humorous Interpretation as well.
The Lakeville Area debate team included students from both Lakeville North and Lakeville South high schools. Drake Olson competed in Congressional Debate. Maddie Cook, Sheridan Norcia, Gus Gerlach and Karen McCoy competed in Public Forum Debate. Elliot Harvanko and Noah Gallagher competed in Public Forum Debate. Nina Baker, Logan Stenzel, Andrew Mills, Abi Nachreiner and Ryan Tullis competed in World Schools Debate.
Headed back in 2019
Lakeville North speech team captains for the 2018-19 school year, Andrea Schiefelbein and Mason Braasch, by placing in the top 14 as underclassmen, earned automatic qualification to the 2019 National Speech and Debate Tournament to be held June 2019 in Dallas, Texas.
The Lakeville North speech team was coached by Jennifer Baese, Yatesh Singh, Katie DeBoer, Emma Johnson, Meg Krekeler, Ali Moore, Natalie Sintek and Liz Vieira Singh. The Lakeville Area debate team was coached by Deserea Niemann, Bryce Piotrowski, Brian Kunz and Hayley Pierce-Ramsdell.
