At Burnsville High School, Coach Kivihalme guided the Blaze to an overall record of 204-109-19. During this time, Coach Kivihalme’s teams won two conference titles in 2007 and 2010, as well as two section titles in 2006 and 2015 advancing to the state boys hockey tournament.
Kivihalme was named Section Coach of the Year in 2007, 2010, and 2015. He was also named 3M Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2010. Kivihalme’s teams were named the Section All-Academic Team five times.
Prior to coaching at Burnsville, Kivihalme served as an assistant coach at Minnetonka High School from 1998-2004.
As a player, Kivihalme was an All-American defenseman for the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Kivihalme played in three NCAA Final Fours and was inducted into the University of Wisconsin-Superior Hall of Fame in 2015.
Kivihalme was also a member of the U20 Finnish National Team. He currently serves as a regional scout for the Regina Pats Hockey Club, and he has also scouted for the Vancouver Giants and the Victoria Royals, all in the Western Hockey League.
“Coach Kivihalme’s energy and ability to build relationships are well known in the Minnesota hockey community. His passion for hockey and dedication to doing what is best for students is clearly evident,” Tom Dasovich said. “Coach Kivihalme is a proven leader in the South Suburban Conference with a strong vision on how to build a program from the youth level through varsity. We are very excited to have Coach Kivihalme as the next leader of our boys hockey program.”
“It has been an awesome 12 years in Burnsville,” Kivihalme said. “I would like to thank Burnsville High School, Burnsville hockey, all the players, coaches, administrators and parents that I have been fortunate to work with, but it is time for new challenge and for me to take the next step in my coaching career. I am excited for the opportunity at Lakeville South and I cannot wait to get to work.”
Kivihalme is married to Shanda Kivihalme and they have two children Teemu (22) and Tomi (7).
