Free Child Care for Tier 1 Essential Workers

Child careThe State of Minnesota has created a list of critical and essential workers who are required to receive free child care during school hours from their school district.

School Day, School-Age Child Care (K-Age 12)

Beginning Monday, September 14, 2020, free school day child care will be offered to District-enrolled, school-age (Kindergarten to age 12) children of Tier 1 essential workers. School Day child care will be offered at each of the eight elementary buildings and staffed by Lakeville Area Schools staff. District staff will support students with their online learning and provide enrichment activities. Transportation will be provided at the start and end of the school day and more details will be provided soon to sign-up.

Tier 1 children attending school in the hybrid model will be offered care on their distance learning days.

Who Are Tier 1 Essential Workers?
The Tier 1 essential workers list as defined by the State of Minnesota is:

  • Healthcare and public health
  • Law enforcement, public safety and first responders
  • Food and agriculture
  • Judicial Branch (essential services)
  • National Guard (activated under a Governor Executive Order)
  • Educators and school staff providing in-person instruction or caring for children of critical workers
  • Child care and school-age care providers

Families not eligible for School Day child care as a Tier 1 worker are encouraged to visit mn.gov/mmb/childcare/families for a listing of local child care providers.

School Day Child Care Schedule Example

More information will be available in the coming weeks. Please note, all district-enrolled, Kindergarten-age 12 children of Tier 1 workers are guaranteed a spot and transportation will be provided at the start and end of the school day. Registration for child care and transportation to child care will open after students have been assigned their Learning Group from their home school.

  • Free School Day child care will not be offered during previously scheduled breaks reflected on a school-board approved calendar. A fee-based, non-school day, child care option may be available.

Paid Child Care Options Thorough Community Education

The District offers fee-based child care for preschool-age children and options for school-age before and after-school care. Tier 1 essential workers will receive priority placement.

Wonder Zone Preschool-Age Child Care

Beginning Monday, September 14, 2020, fee-based preschool-age child care will be available. This care will be provided from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Priority will be given to children of Tier 1 workers, however the program is planning to accommodate all currently registered Wonder Zone students with current schedules. 

Group sizes will be as per MDE/MDH guidelines, with typical groups sizes of 10 students. Health screenings will be conducted in accordance with district plans.

Kid Zone Before and After School, School-Age Child Care (K-5)

Beginning Monday, September 14, 2020, fee-based before and after school, school-age child care will be available. Priority will be given to children of Tier 1 workers, but fees will be charged. Additional families served based upon capacity. 

Group sizes will follow MDE/MDH guidelines, and are currently set at a 1:14 staff to student ratio. Health screenings will be conducted in accordance with district plans.

Kid Zone Before and After School information will be available the week of August 17. Registration will open after students have been assigned their Learning Group from their home school. Families currently registered for the 2020-21 Kid Zone program will receive a separate communication from the Kid Zone program.
