At Impact Academy, two classes receive a year of free books

With a little help from the community, two Lakeville Area elementary educators are providing their students with a year of free new books, and students are already seeing their first copies.

Tanya Reardon teaches second grade at Impact Academy at Orchard Lake and first came across the idea online: by lining up small-dollar donations from family and friends, it would be possible to provide each of her students with a free book for every month of the 2018-19 school year.

“How cool would it be if ALL of my students could receive one free book every month?”

Reardon wrote in a Facebook post asking for sponsors, “I’m stealing this from another teacher… but love the idea! Each month I receive the Scholastic Book Club fliers to send home for students to share with their families and purchase books if they would like. How cool would it be if ALL of my students could receive one free book every month?”

Fellow Impact Academy teacher Kalli Early did the same for her first-grade classroom. The first order of books arrived October 1, thanks to the sponsors who pledged $9 each toward nine months of $1 dollar books from the Scholastic Book Clubs catalog for Reardon’s and Early’s students.

The selection of $1 books available in the catalog changes each month and ranges in difficulty according to student reading, ensuring that everyone in Ms. Reardon’s class has a new book that’s suited to their abilities and enabling them to grow throughout the year.

Lakeville Area Schools is proud to recognize the initiative and ingenuity of our terrific educators. If you have a story you’d like to share, send us an email at isd194@isd194.org.
