Graduation Update: New Optional Graduation Celebrations Added

In consultation with the Lakeville Area Board of Education and taking input from students and their families to heart, Superintendent Michael Baumann has decided to expand upon the plan for graduation. The plan strikes a balance between the health and safety concerns expressed by the Minnesota Department of Education and the Minnesota Department of Health, while honoring our graduates and being responsive to the feedback of our community.

Graduation weekend will kick off on Saturday, June 6 at 2 p.m. with a parade of city and school officials through Lakeville, celebrating our seniors. On the evening of Saturday, June 6, we will hold the official commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2020 virtually as scheduled and previously communicated. Finally, we have adjusted the optional photo opportunity to create a more formalized, socially-distanced and contactless opportunity to walk across the stage at your school with your cap, gown and diploma cover and have a professional picture taken on Sunday, June 7. Below, please find an itinerary for graduation weekend with more details on these additions and changes.

“I know how hard this has been for you. Despite the challenges you faced these last couple months, take pride in knowing that you made it. You are graduating! No pandemic can ever take that away from you. And no modified graduation ceremony – virtual or otherwise – can diminish the importance and significance of your accomplishments,” said Baumann.

Graduation Weekend

Saturday, June 6, 2 p.m. | Parade to honor the Class of 2020

The parade will begin at 2 p.m. from Lakeville South High School and will drive along a 10-mile route through Lakeville. This parade will include vehicles driven by school district staff, fire trucks, police cars and more. Seniors and their families can watch the parade as spectators along the route if they so choose, but should practice proper social distancing and take other measures as necessary for the health and safety of everyone involved.

Saturday, June 6 | Virtual Commencement Ceremony

  • Lakeville Area Learning Center: 5:00 p.m.
  • Lakeville South High School: 6:00 p.m.
  • Lakeville North High School: 8:00 p.m.

The recorded ceremonies will be broadcast on the following platforms:

Sunday, June 7, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. | Optional Contactless Stage Walk and Professional Photos

For students and families who would like to do so, a covered graduation stage will be set up on each high school football field and at the ALC for you to walk across and have your photo taken by a professional photographer from Lifetouch. This will be organized by pre-scheduled time slots in order to practice social distancing. For your health and safety, students and their families will need to follow posted health and safety guidelines, including practicing social distancing and wearing PPE, not congregating beyond your family unit of eight people or less, and ensuring that you do not arrive before or stay after your scheduled time. Please note that this opportunity has changed from what was previously communicated and will only be available on this date. Your school will provide more detail on how and when your family can come to the school and the safety precautions you will be asked to follow.

As a reminder, your caps, gowns, diploma covers and other adornments will be distributed via contactless curbside pick-up on Monday, June 1 at Lakeville North and Lakeville South high schools from 3-6 p.m. ALC and LinK12-Lakeville students can pick up these items from either Lakeville North or Lakeville South depending on the school they selected. Your school will be sending detailed information regarding traffic routing and safety procedures for this pickup in a future communication.

Diplomas will be mailed after June 6. DVDs of the commencement ceremonies will be available for sale after June 6 and all proceeds will be donated to the high school student video clubs.

If you have photos from throughout your senior year that you would like shared by the district as part of the graduation celebrations on our social media, LETV and Channel 188, please send them to with the subject line: 2020 Graduation.
