Lakeville South High School senior Nina Baker has been selected to serve on the Minnesota Youth Council (MYC). It is a collaboration of youth and adults who work together to empower young people across the state to exercise their voices, opinions and ideas to take action on issues that affect youth. Baker will represent Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District.
During the first half of the year, Baker and her fellow youth representatives will act as an advisor committee to the Minnesota Department of Education. They advise staff on youth issues in education and strive to advance equity in education. They will also work with other statewide agencies including the Department of Health to ensure all youth have access to clean water, air and equal opportunities across the state.
During the last half of the year, youth representatives will work with the Minnesota State Legislature as an official committee of the state government. They will meet with elected officials and advocate for legislation and policies that support equity.
Baker says she hopes to turn her passion for politics into a Political Science career in academia.
